Why this matters
A factory reset alone may not remove account activation locks. Backups, account removal and proof of ownership are separate parts of a safe sale.
Safe steps to try
- Complete and verify a current backup.
- Sign out of the main Apple, Google or manufacturer account and disable device-finding locks.
- Remove SIM and memory cards.
- Erase the phone using the official reset option after account removal.
- Bring identification, ownership information and any box or accessories that may affect value.
What to avoid
- Do not give a buyer your account password.
- Do not erase before confirming the backup contains what you need.
- Do not sell a device that is still financed, reported lost or linked to another person’s account.
When to stop and get help
If you cannot remove an activation lock, recover the account through the manufacturer’s official process before selling. A repair shop cannot legitimately bypass ownership security.
Back up, sign out, remove locks, erase, and keep proof of the transaction.
