Cracked iPhone Screen but Touch Still Works: What Should You Do?

A cracked iPhone screen can still respond perfectly to touch, which often makes people wonder whether it is safe to keep using. The answer depends on the depth of the damage, whether the display is still stable and whether the crack is getting worse.

Can I keep using an iPhone with a cracked screen?

A small cosmetic crack may leave the phone fully usable for a while, but broken glass can spread with pressure, temperature changes or another impact. Cracks can also expose sharp edges and reduce protection against dust and moisture.

If the screen begins flickering, showing lines, developing black patches or losing touch response, the problem has moved beyond cosmetic glass damage.

Signs the display needs attention soon

  • Sharp or lifting glass around the crack.
  • Green, white or coloured lines on the display.
  • Black spots or ink-like patches.
  • Touch that misses taps or activates by itself.
  • Display flickering or brightness problems.
  • The crack is spreading across the screen.
  • The phone was bent or heavily impacted.

Should I add a screen protector over the crack?

A protector can sometimes help contain loose glass temporarily, but it is not a repair and it does not restore the screen’s structural integrity. Avoid pressing hard when installing one over badly broken glass.

Back up your iPhone before repair

If the screen still works, make sure important data is backed up. A cracked display can deteriorate unexpectedly, especially after further impact or moisture exposure.

Do not send passcodes through an ordinary web or WhatsApp enquiry. If access is needed for testing, the repair team can explain the safest process when you book or visit.

What affects iPhone screen replacement options?

The correct replacement depends on the exact iPhone model, the type of display fitted, the available part options and the condition of the rest of the phone. Aftermarket screens can vary in brightness, colour, touch response and power use, so it is worth asking what part is being quoted rather than comparing price alone.

Phone Shop Bristol is an independent repair business. We do not claim aftermarket parts are Apple-original parts. Where different part options are available, we explain the quoted option before you approve the repair.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cracked screen always mean the LCD or OLED is damaged?

No. The outer glass can crack while the image and touch functions continue working. However, deeper display damage can develop later.

Can a cracked iPhone screen get worse?

Yes. Pressure, flexing, another drop or temperature changes can extend a crack or damage the display underneath.

Is screen replacement worth it?

That depends on the phone’s age, condition, repair cost and current value. A good repair shop should explain the available options before you decide.

Qualifying repairs are covered under our published repair warranty terms. Accidental, physical and liquid damage are excluded.
