• Keep a separate local copy of irreplaceable photos, documents and business files.
• Disconnect or protect backup drives when not in use.
• Test that you can open a sample of backed-up files.
• Review backups before replacing, resetting or repairing a device.

What to avoid

• Do not confuse file synchronisation with a complete historical backup.
• Do not keep the only backup beside the original device.
• Do not store recovery passwords only inside the account they protect.
