Need help with a broken phone in Bristol? A cracked screen, a phone that will not charge, or a handset that suddenly stops responding can feel urgent. The safest first step depends on the fault. This guide explains what you can check without opening the device, when to stop using it, and how to request a repair assessment at our two Bristol locations. It does not promise a same-day repair: parts, diagnosis and appointment capacity vary by model and fault.
First: make the phone safe
If a phone is unusually hot, swollen, smoking, leaking or giving off a strange smell, stop using and charging it. Do not squeeze, puncture or attempt to remove a damaged battery. Move away from a potential fire risk and seek appropriate emergency help if necessary. A device that has suffered a serious impact or liquid exposure may need professional inspection even if it briefly turns on.
For an ordinary cracked screen without battery warning signs, avoid pressing on broken glass. If you can use the phone safely, back up important photos, contacts and files before handing it over. A repair can sometimes involve data loss, and no repair shop can guarantee recovery from a damaged storage device. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends keeping recoverable backups of important information.
Cracked screen or touch not working
A screen can have several different faults: cracked outer glass, lines or dark patches on the display, flickering, or touch that responds only in some areas. These symptoms do not necessarily require the same part or repair. Avoid further pressure on a damaged screen and do not assume a protective film will restore damaged display layers.
When requesting a quote, tell the team your exact make and model, whether the image is visible, whether touch still works, and whether the phone has been dropped or repaired before. We can then explain available assessment and replacement options. See our Bristol phone repair service for common repair types.
Phone not charging: simple checks first
If the device is dry and shows no signs of damage, check the wall socket, use a compatible known-working charger and cable, and look for obvious cable wear. If the connector is loose, the phone charges only at a particular angle, or it becomes hot, stop repeatedly forcing the cable into place. A charging issue can involve the cable, adapter, port, battery, software or circuitry; a charging-port replacement is not always the correct diagnosis.
Do not push pins, metal tools or liquids into a charging connector. For more detail, read our phone charging fault checklist.
Water or liquid damage: do not test by charging
If the device or connector is wet, disconnect cables and do not plug it into power. Do not use a hairdryer, compressed air, cotton bud or rice to dry an iPhone charging port. Apple’s UK liquid-detection guidance explains that moisture can corrode connector pins, and Samsung UK’s advice warns against charging a wet device or inserting objects into its port.
After a serious spill or immersion, switch off the phone if safe and arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly switching it on. Corrosion can progress after the outside appears dry. The extent of any damage and the possibility of data recovery cannot be confirmed from a photograph or a message alone. See our liquid-damage first steps.
Before bringing an iPhone or Android phone for repair
If the phone is usable, make a current backup and check that your important information can be restored. Note the exact model and describe when the fault started. Bring a charger or cable only if it is relevant to the problem. Remove unnecessary accessories and keep your account credentials private. Apple’s UK service-preparation guidance recommends backing up and specifically says not to disclose your Apple Account password or device passcode to others. For independent repair, ask the technician what access, if any, is necessary for diagnosis, and enter credentials yourself when appropriate.
If your phone will not switch on, do not reset or erase it in the hope of fixing a hardware fault, especially if the data matters. Tell the repair team that data preservation is a priority before approving work. You can also read our guide to backing up before a repair visit.
What to expect from a Bristol repair enquiry
- Tell us the device and fault. Include the brand, exact model, symptoms, damage history and whether data is important.
- Choose a location. Phone Shop Bristol links to Fone Revive at 5 Union Street, Broadmead (BS1 2DD), or 55 Gloucester Road, Bishopston (BS7 8AD).
- Ask for an assessment and quote. The team can explain whether a repair, further diagnosis or a replacement device may be appropriate. Costs, part options and timing must be confirmed for your device.
- Approve the work. Ask about any diagnostic charge, replacement-part quality, warranty conditions and data-handling arrangements before agreeing.
Choose your Bristol repair store and start a booking enquiry, or contact the local team. The booking page links to each branch’s existing booking system; submitting an enquiry is not a guaranteed appointment until the store confirms it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my phone fixed today?
Some common repairs may be possible promptly, but this depends on the exact model, diagnosis, parts and technician availability. Contact your chosen store to confirm before travelling; we do not guarantee a same-day turnaround.
How much does an emergency phone repair cost?
There is no reliable single price for all phones. Screen technology, model, damage and the available replacement-part options affect the quote. Ask for a model-specific price and any diagnostic fees before approving work.
Will I lose my photos or messages?
Many hardware repairs do not require data deletion, but faults, testing or unforeseen complications can still lead to data loss. Make a verified backup if possible and tell the technician if data recovery is your priority. Never assume that data is guaranteed safe.
Should I replace a phone instead of repairing it?
Compare the confirmed repair quote with the device’s age, remaining software support, condition and replacement value. If the device has several faults or severe liquid damage, replacement may be more economical. Ask for the options rather than deciding on an unverified diagnosis.
Are you an Apple or Samsung authorised repair centre?
Phone Shop Bristol and Fone Revive operate as independent repair businesses. Ask about the part type and any relevant manufacturer features or messages that may be affected by an independent repair.
