- Choose a cable rated for the charger’s power, especially for laptops.
- Confirm whether you need data transfer, video output or charging only.
- Look for clear manufacturer specifications and cable length.
- Replace cables with loose plugs, damaged jackets or overheating connectors.
What to avoid
- Do not assume every USB-C cable supports monitor output.
- Do not use an unmarked cable for high-power laptop charging.
- Do not bend the cable sharply at the connector.
When to stop and get help
If a connector or cable becomes unusually hot, disconnect it and test with a known-good compatible accessory. Persistent heat may indicate device-port damage.
