Daily Tech Tip 24: A lithium battery can swell as it degrades or fails. The first visible sign may be a lifting screen, raised trackpad, separated case or device that no longer sits flat.
Why this matters
A swollen battery is a physical safety issue, not just reduced runtime. Pressure can damage the display and case, while puncture or crushing can create heat and fire risk.
Safe steps to try
- Stop charging the device.
- Power it off if this can be done without pressing or bending the swollen area.
- Place it on a non-flammable surface away from heat and combustible materials.
- Arrange professional removal and appropriate battery recycling.
- Back up data only if the device can be used briefly without heat or further swelling.
What to avoid
- Do not puncture, squeeze or attempt to flatten the battery.
- Do not keep the device in a hot car.
- Do not send a visibly swollen battery through ordinary post without approved handling.
When to stop and get help
If the battery hisses, smokes, smells strongly or becomes hot, move away, alert others and contact emergency services if there is an immediate fire risk.
Stop charging and treat swelling as urgent. Battery replacement should happen before the pressure damages more components.
